The Road to Diamond, Day 246: Toys “R’nt” Us

0

August 1, 2025- Sydney Sweeney is not a plaything. The marketing of clothing, using homophonic words that could be construed as subliminal references to their lexicographic “mates”, is unfortunate, and may or may not be intentionally so, or even a source of double-entendre. The last conclusion that should be drawn from this matter is that it is “okay” to cast aspersions on a human being, because of her/his legitimate work. I would hope that Ms. Sweeney would quickly and forcefully stand up for herself, if these advertisements continue to be taken the wrong way.

For the record, I do not personally find any one ethnicity, age group or phenotype any more inherently attractive than any other. I hope Sydney takes pride in her appearance and takes care of her overall health. I hope the same for anyone, of any age. That wish is just basic human decency. I hope each person is also able to realize his/her dreams, so long as these are not hurtful to others.

None of us should be viewed as a toy or object to be manipulated, by anyone else. If that desire to manipulate is a challenge for someone, then it is something for that person to overcome, much like a physical addiction. It is not something for a target or victim to just “endure”. That is my take on all of the physical/sexual abuse allegations and scandals that are current.

The Road to Diamond, Day 244: Exchange vs. Relational

3

July 30, 2025- One morning in late May, 1975, I awoke at a camp site, in Mount Greylock State Reservation, centered on Massachusetts’ highest peak. After getting myself together, I walked down to a spot where several teenagers were chatting, they having camped after their senior prom. After a fashion, I was asked why I wasn’t more friendly. I had no real answer at the time, other than “I just haven’t had my coffee yet”. (Cue the eye rolls). It did set me to thinking, though, as to just how important other people were to me, at that stage in my life. Gradually, over the past 50 years, being congenial has assumed importance to me at some times more than at others.

This afternoon, I came across an article about the range of interactions between customers and workers, at grocery stores and restaurants. Some, in both roles, are geared more towards an exchange mindset-more focused on getting the business done. Others are more relational, in their interactions. They enjoy small talk, visiting, hobnobbing-just getting to know people better.

I could say that I am somewhere in the middle of that continuum. There is, though, more of a foundation of being relational in my interactions. Everyone, it seems, appreciates being asked how their day is going and to be wished well, at the close of the interaction, no matter how cut and dried a business exchange it is. Some lonely people need more time, and it can be hard to ease one’s way loose, when there is pressing business at hand. I have managed the tightrope act fairly well, especially in the past twenty years.

Penny taught me the skill of deferred attention, i.e. “Hold that thought, while I take care of this other matter” or “Let me get back to you on that.” It has reaped dividends over the years, and yes, I do get back to people-even if it takes a week or two. Sometimes, they are surprised when I do get back to them, as it may have slipped their busy minds as well-but the continuation, or the closure, is much appreciated.

The truth seems to be that, even in business, a purely exchange-oriented stance will not reap long-term benefits. Elon Musk’s comment that “Empathy is a weakness of Western society” does not augur well for continued success in living. One can’t be tethered to other people’s private lives, but neither can one be totally unmoored.

I rather enjoy both the pleasure of many friends’ company and the satisfaction of accomplishing honest deeds, both of commerce and of service.

The Road to Diamond, Day 243: On Staying Strong

0

July 29, 2025- A friend, who I visited today, has been a paragon of perseverance, over the past three months. After suffering severe injury, while on a trip abroad, he has endured multiple surgeries and lengthy periods of lying down, along with intense physical therapy. His wife, as is only natural, has been his rock. It was clear to me, during and after the visit, that he is going to make it through and show the right way to resilience.

Shades of 2004? Perhaps, with today’s 8.8 earthquake, off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Penninsula, generating some tsunami activity. Much of this may affect the islands of the Pacific Basin, the west coasts of North and South America, the east coasts of Asia, from Russia and Japan to the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia and the north and east coasts of Australia. A lot was learned in December, 2004, so people are already headed inland or to higher ground. With wisdom and learning from experience, communities and nations can stay strong.

Here in Home Base 1, our main concern is watching a wildfire that is 200 miles away, and keeping one eye on the extended period of dryness. So far, we have made it through the fire season locally, without much difficulty. Rain is falling to the east and may well be here again by Thursday. Even when “putting up with” extended sunshine, we need to focus on staying strong.

The Road to Diamond, Day 241: Mnemonics

2

July 27, 2025- Looking at the “Jumble” on a place mat at our weekly Post 6 Breakfast, this morning, I was able to solve the four words within a minute. Word puzzles have typically been easy for me, over the years. A few months back, I noticed that there were some simple recalls escaping me, though, and it appeared that the normal vagaries of aging were showing their faces.

I also noticed the spots on my hands getting brighter, and so first invested in Liver Cleanse capsules, which helped some. When those ran out, I started in with Liver/Kidney Cleanse capsules. These have been even m ore effective, and with noticeable improvement in both organs’ functioning. The spots are faded even more.

Somehow, both my energy level, which has been good, has improved even more and the brain fog is also a lot less. The “Mnemonic Plague” is seemingly connected to liver and/or kidney health. Short naps are still needed, when I have a heavy activity schedule, although more so when the schedule is full of sedentary meetings than when physical activity is involved.

I will take the ongoing improvements, from top to bottom, as long as the Divine sees fit to grant them.

The Road to Diamond, Day 240: Retro Vibes

0

July 26,2025- There was a consensus among the staff at Farmers Market, this afternoon-The energy today was quite strange. Those who are astrologically inclined put the blame on the retrograde of Planet Mercury. A planetary retrograde is the seeming movement of the orb away from the other planets in the solar system. It is said to bring those influenced by it, back over old ground or unresolved past issues.

I can only say there were a few moments today, when I was feeling a bit of tension-mainly within my own space. At those points, I just stood still and told self to get a grip. It was not going to be a day of being irritated with people, who were just going about their day-even if it seemed that too many were in the same space at once. It worked, and taking my time with several small tasks, one at a time, helped me keep the peace.

Towards the end of my work at the Market, a disabled veteran came along and offered to help. I was absolutely glad to have his assistance and it seemed to make his day. Too many people are made to feel like they don’t matter. I won’t be one of those who stokes that sad fire. My father taught us that everyone has a place in the world, and no one ought to be made to feel worthless. I hope I have made that clear to those who have crossed my path, over the years.

This evening was spent enjoying the music of The Dust Ups, a classic country and surfer music band, out of Tempe. They brought back memories of songs by Dick Dale, the Surfaris, Bob Wills and Don Gibson. Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Mexico’s Consuelo Vazquez were represented. (The trio is not to be confused with the four man New Jersey band, The Dust-ups, who also offer country fare). I liked their arrangements and end the day glad that there were no dust ups here, even with the strange energy earlier.

The Road to Diamond, Day 239: Open Hearts

0

July 25,2025- I have often wondered if a young friend, who is seemingly in perpetual good cheer, ever experiences a downside. It’s a ridiculous musing, as no one escapes periods of downheartedness or disappointment. This morning, she had something of a disagreement with another person, while I was present, and thus my musings were answered. With steady support from a few of us, she shortly thereafter bounced back. Her underlying emotional foundation is solid, the signs of open-heartedness.

In my own experiences, over the past fifteen years or so, the same principle has kept me afloat. I can hardly say that life has been letter-perfect, but even the loss of my wife in 2011 did not result in a severe tailspin that might have ended my own well-being. We can see that there is another level of existence, beyond this one, and I still feel guidance from her spirit, as well as those of many others.

There were two Baha’i gatherings today: A small study session, this afternoon, focused on the purpose of prayer. It is clear that the main purpose is to open one’s heart to the Divine, and thus make possible the means to continued spiritual growth. The second session, this evening, looked at what is meant by “The Kingdom of God on Earth”. Likewise, that state of affairs will come gradually, and will be more realized when the majority of humanity turns to the Divine, and away from the trappings of ego. This may be a long process or one of intermediate length, but I sense that our species is on its way.

There will, no doubt, be shocks and setbacks ahead; however, the hearts of more people are increasingly being opened-either by their own choice or by dint of life taking hold of them, and imparting deep lessons.

The Road to Diamond, Day 234: Identity

3

July 20,2025- This evening, I spent a few hours watching all I cared to, of the 2010s series Blindspot. It begins with a woman who has been injected with drugs that lead to her total amnesia. Of course, nothing of the sort lasts forever, and through snippets of triggered memory, helped in part by her having been tattooed in specific manners, over her body, she is soon faced with two DNA paths, as to her real identity.

I may get back to the series at some point, but this week will be focused on three aspects of my own identity: Red Cross documentation, study of Baha’i guidance, and a friend’s need for transportation. Today was just focused on the leisure aspect of who I am. Breakfast with friends, exercise at Planet Fitness and light reading, followed by crossword puzzles and the aforementioned program.

I have a much firmer grasp of my identity and purpose now, than I did in certain parts of years past. There has never been any doubt as to my family, or the love of my late wife. Any gaps in understanding have more or less began and ended with my own being at peace with self. There are things that seem to have been kept from me, by extended family who have gone on-but none of that has any bearing on who I am now, so bygones are bygones. I’ve elaborated in other posts about the various parts of my life, and the people who are important in those elements. What matters most now is what I am going to do with those parts, as I approach the next quarter century, or whatever part of it I may be given.

There is no amnesia, or conflicting paths, as to who I am or what I represent. That’s what matters most.

The Road to Diamond, Day 231: Ahead of the Game

0

July 17, 2025- I decided to take an early morning breakfast at the newly-opened Gurley Girl Bakery, just up the street from HB 1. The problem was that this is a late-opening establishment (9 am), and it was 8:30. Breakfast came from across the road, at Scooters, which actually has rather good burritos, that remind me a bit of the fare at Glenn’s Bakery, Gallup.

Many times, I have found that being proactive needs to be scaled back, in the face of forces that just aren’t ready for what I have had in mind. I had been thinking that it might be useful to go to the Native American Baha’i Institute today, and conduct a survey for its use as a secondary Red Cross shelter, then return back here this evening, Prudence led to changing the game plan to combining this with a journey up to Page, for a similar effort, next Wednesday and Thursday. It is not often wise to get ahead of the game.

In the late afternoon, I spent some time listening to two men who hold slightly different views form one another, but who have become friends by hearing one another out. Their take is that the nation will do best by taking a Big Tent approach, as has been the case in the most successful years of our nation’s history-indeed of the heritage of most nations. Those who exclude people with whom they disagree are also getting ahead of the game. I have been happiest when among those who can express various points of view, so long as they do not advocate violence against those who disagree with them.

In cases of oppression, those who seem ahead of the game invariably end up finding themselves behind.

The Road to Diamond, Day 230: The Water Is Clear

0

July 16, 2025- We each have a responsibility to investigate truth for ourselves. This is all the more urgent, given the generation of informational pieces, using artificial intelligence. While AI can be useful in graphic design and outlining programs, it also is woefully inadequate in writing factual stories. I have found several such tall tales, involving popular figures. I missed the fallacy in a story regarding a disabled person, until someone presented me with several similar stories about the same disabled person. Stories cannot really be written by algorithm.

This morning, I woke to see an angry emoji apparently sent by a dear friend, with no real context. Upon writing back and forth, it became clear that she had pushed the wrong button on her phone. No harm, no foul. The clearer message was that we were in a good place.

Following through on a plan to shelter concession workers from the North Rim, I was able to arrange tentative lodging. An hour or so later, word came that the employer was going to find more suitable housing for the workers, on its own dime. A shelter will not be needed. That also frees me to take care of other matters.

Procedural matters that were unclear around noon became transparent in mid-afternoon, through information provided by a third person in the discussion. In another context, procedural matters and someone’s dissatisfaction with my work will need further clarification. I’m sure those waters will get clearer, as time goes on.

What started out as “one of those days” actually became a good one. Happy conversation with a dearly loved person, across the ocean, being able to help another friend in the same region with concerns, getting the sheltering issue resolved, and pleasant visits with two friends here in town are not going to be negated by one rather terse encounter,at a business meeting later in the day. The waters of my river are running clear.

The Road to Diamond, Day 228: Simple Gets Complex

0

July 14,2025- It was a sign that the day was going to see routine matters become complicated. The road scheme, in the neighbourhood where friend’s house is located, is under repavement, which means it is being dug up and will gradually get new layers of asphalt. As with any repavement in a close neighbourhood, there needs to be close cooperation and communication between the workers and motorists. I take care to make sure that there are no misunderstandings, so while a three-minute drive to feed the cats became seven, all was smooth.

Later in the day, I found that Soup Kitchen was laid out more like the Luby’s Cafeteria of old. There was twice the amount of fare available tonight, which was a fine midsummer’s treat for the guests: Three kinds of pizza, angel hair pasta with two kinds of sauce, two types of squash, two salads and a variety of desserts. I was the pasta and sauce person. The cleanup took a bit longer than usual, but the diners were most pleased. The line manager doesn’t always remember my name, yet she does know what I do, and is glad that I show up most weeks.

Back to feeding the cats, after Soup Kitchen, I found that the road work was winding down for the day, but it was still necessary to go slowly around heavy equipment that was being brought into position for tomorrow’s resumption of the work. Mundane tasks can become complex, at any time. It’s a good way to hone the skills of patience and humility.
